Mangusta Yachts and the Rise of High Performance Luxury

Maxi Open, GranSport and Oceano: how the Overmarine Group from Viareggio combines speed, Italian design and long-range capability in its Mangusta yachts.

Performance yachts redefining speed and luxury

In the evolving world of luxury yachting, performance is no longer defined solely by speed. Increasingly, owners are seeking vessels that combine architectural elegance, intelligent engineering and emotional design language. Few shipyards embody this philosophy as consistently as Mangusta.

The shipyard behind Mangusta

Mangusta yachts are built by the Overmarine Group in Viareggio, Tuscany – one of the most important centres of Italian yachtbuilding. The company is family-run by the Balducci family and, since 1985, has built more than 300 yachts. Production is spread across several facilities in Viareggio, Massa and Pisa, supported by international offices in the United States and on the French Riviera.

Three lines, one philosophy

Today, Mangusta yachts are offered in three distinct lines, each answering a different idea of yachting:

  • Maxi Open: the line that made Mangusta famous. Fast open yachts with sleek, low profiles, built for owners who love speed and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Sizes range from around 28 metres to more than 60 metres.
  • GranSport: a blend of Maxi Open performance and the volume of a long-range yacht. The first GranSport, a 54-metre yacht, was launched in 2018.
  • Oceano: long-range displacement yachts with metal construction, designed for world cruising and extended stays at sea, typically between around 43 and 60 metres.

What defines a Mangusta?

Across all three lines, certain characteristics remain constant: distinctive Italian styling, a focus on speed and agility, stable and quiet behaviour at sea, and generous interior volumes that can be customised to the owner’s wishes. Design and much of the engineering are developed in-house, which allows the yard to keep a recognisable signature across very different yacht types.

The Maxi Open in particular has had a lasting influence on the market: the idea of a large, very fast open yacht with a lifestyle-oriented layout has inspired many competitors over the years.

Mangusta in the performance segment

In the segment of fast luxury yachts, Mangusta competes with other Italian specialists such as AB Yachts. While AB Yachts focuses strongly on maximum speed – see our article AB Yachts: Speed Meets Engineering – Mangusta’s range extends further into larger yachts and long-range cruising, from sporty open yachts to explorer-style Oceano models.

Conclusion

Mangusta shows that high performance and true luxury do not exclude each other. With three clearly defined lines, the Viareggio yard covers everything from fast Mediterranean open yachts to ocean-going superyachts – always with a distinctly Italian character.
