When Barcelona’s old harbour transforms into a floating exhibition space in mid-October, the real planning for the coming season begins for many owners and prospective buyers. The Barcelona International Boat Show – known in Spain as the Salón Náutico Internacional de Barcelona – shows yachts where they belong: in the water. For buyers, it is an opportunity for direct comparison; for sellers, a reliable barometer of the market.

A harbour show with a long tradition
In 2026 the Salón Náutico reaches its 63rd edition. It is organised by Fira de Barcelona together with the Spanish industry association ANEN (Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas). The show extends across several quays of the old harbour, just a few minutes’ walk from the Ramblas and easily reached by metro.
Moll de la Fusta is home to motor yachts and sports boats, complemented by equipment and accessories. New here is a covered pavilion: according to the organiser, more than 240 ports and marinas are presenting themselves in the “Marinas & Harbour Facilities” area, either directly or through their associations. For owners considering a new berth or a different cruising ground, it is a rare opportunity to compare many options in one place.
At Moll d’Espanya and in Marina Port Vell, the focus is on sailing yachts and catamarans. This is also where the show village is located, with food and drink and space for quieter conversations. The organiser stresses that sea trials are offered in Barcelona – an argument that sets a harbour show apart from any indoor event. The organiser estimates three to five hours for a tour; serious buyers would do better to allow two days.
For buyers: well prepared on the pontoon
Shows tempt visitors into spontaneous decisions. The best results come to those who arrive with a clear idea of what they want and make purposeful use of their days at Port Vell:
- Total budget, not purchase price: Factor in berthing, insurance, maintenance, winter storage, a skipper or crew if needed, and reserves for repairs from the outset. Running costs are what first-time yacht buyers most often underestimate.
- Book appointments in advance: Stands and sea trials are in high demand, especially at the weekend. Registering your preferred models in advance gets you more time and undisturbed conversations.
- Bring a list of questions: Delivery time, equipment packages, warranty terms, the service network in your intended cruising ground and how resale value is likely to develop.
- Make use of the sea trial: Behaviour under power or sail, noise levels, visibility from the helm and manoeuvrability in the harbour can only be judged on the water.
- New build or used boat: Alongside new models, well-maintained used yachts are worth a look. With any used purchase, an independent survey and a sea trial should come before the signature.
Anyone buying in Spain or planning to base their boat in the Mediterranean should clarify flag, registration and tax questions such as VAT at an early stage – ideally before a contract is on the table.
For sellers: reading the market in autumn
The boat show falls just after the season – precisely when many owners take stock and buyers firm up their plans for the following year. What is shown, sought after and negotiated at Port Vell gives a realistic picture of how your yacht is positioned in the current environment.
- Realistic valuation: New models and specifications change how used yachts are perceived. A valuation that takes the current market offering into account shortens the time on the market.
- Complete paperwork: Proof of ownership, registration, proof of VAT paid, maintenance and service history and an up-to-date inventory all build trust.
- Document the condition: Recent photographs and a well-kept condition straight after the end of the season make a noticeable difference.
- Maintain discretion: Not every sale needs to be public. A targeted approach to selected prospective buyers is often the more appropriate route.
